Default 1992 Mustang rear end pop and check engine light

im having some issues with my 1992 foxbody while driving.

first is the check engine light has been recently been coming on but only stays on for about a second then shuts off. just recently it did it more then once on a 5min trip.

secondly while making turns i hear/feel a pop in the rear end. i have not a clue what it could be.

and last(this could just be me) my idle seems a bit low maybe about 650 700rpm at idle.

thanks for looking.

tune up would probably help the idle. get the check engine light checked to find the codes. i know pep boys checks the engine lights for free if you sign up for the rewards program and the bearing in the rear axle might be going bad if you got a popping sound. jack up the rear and spin the tires and look for unusual movement. if you dont see anything put you fingers in the spring gently and spin the tires. if you feel vibration its probably that sides bearing

i just put in spark plugs about 2 months ago. full msd ignition was just installed about 3 weeks ago and a bbk cold air intake. i recently noticed my voltage gauge seems to be unusually low at times. especially when comming to a stop, it seems like it wants to shut off but then kicks back up other times it will just shut off.

ill check out that rear end thanks

You may need a new alternator if your voltage gauge is acting funny. What kind of noise is it? Like a clank or squeak?

Nevermind just read it again. Could be your gears, ever have them done?

the rear feels like a pop sounds like a pop/clunk. ive got alot of squeaks right now because all the bushings need to be replaced.

yeah i was just thinking today it might be the alternator. is there a way i can check to see if its bad?

just recently ive noticed my rpm gauge spaz out for no reason. is it because the gauge is just going bad or is it something more?

U might need to check your Idle Air control valve. Take it off and see if u can gently move the valve back and forth. If it moves freely than u are ok, but if it feels sticky than spray a little throttle cleaner into it. Than try to move it again. If it is still sticky than replace it. Also check for a vacuum leak. The clunk noise u need to put the rear in the air and just spray a little WD-40 on the bushings to eliminate those noises to hear the rear end noise. If it is still their than u need to take the rear cover off and inspect the gears and see how much play their is. Also check the bottom of the case for metal. The check engine light may or may not be able to be checked by Pepboys because it is a 90 with OBD 1.

Sorry 92

The alternator may not be bad because when your idle goes down so dose the ability for the alternator to make power.
