Default speed density tuning?

my 5.0 is set up with a speed density EFI system - i know that it's supposed to be MAF for my model year, but a previous owner decided to put this on it.

i've hear that speed density ekes out a few more hp than MAF due to the reduced drag on the intake, and while i do have a MAF computer and harness sitting around, i don't have the MAF sensor that goes on the intake elbow.

i just picked up a set of trickflow heads with intake and camshaft and i have a feeling it won't run well with the stock SD tune - what's a good shop in nj that i can visit to have my new setup tuned? what kind of price range am i looking at?

You can try Big Daddy Performance in Lakewood nj, Robs Performance in Belleville, and I am sure there are a few shops even closer to you. The speed density system was a few tenths quicker due to no maf sensor and a slightly more aggressive camshaft profile.
Once you start adding heads and bigger intakes, the computer loses the mapping for driveability. It runs on preprogrammed parameters and can't keep up with your mods.

honestly i would get a maf sensor before you do anything because SD does not like cams at all because of the way the MAP sensor reads the air pressure in the intake manifold. even with a tune you wont run nearly as good as with a MAF sensor. i would do the MAF swap then go back to the guy you bought the car from and smack him in the face for switching it in the first place.

oh and if you switch back to MAF you wont need a tune to run your h/c/i, it will run just fine.

yea im with hack. maf is the way to go. maybe on a race car when you can tune it perfect for 1 run yea the lack of a maf restriction will give you that 1/4hp.

On a street car maf is just more stable and the car will run better. Esp with those mods. It speaks for itsself, most every new car has maf

yeah i'm thinking that's what i'll do. my original plan was to build a 331 with this stuff, but it's just so freaking tempting to throw it all on my stock bottom end now!

i'll err on the side of caution and wisdom though, and continue with my 331 buildup plan - even if it means waiting months to get this stuff on the car.

by my estimates running a 331 with this setup should yield a lot of torque and power (for a street car). my mostly stock driveline is making me nervous... i've got a FRPP clutch & clutch quadrant, but a stock t-5 with many miles and so-so synchros, as well as a stock 2.73 rear end and trac-lok w/ 28-spline axles. i'm thinking it would be very wise to install a new trak-lok w/ 31-spline axles, and upgrade to either a t-5 world class or maybe even a t-56 trans (6-speed - then i could run 4.10 or 4.30 gears and still drive on the turnpike ). that's some serious $$$ though, in the couple of thousands...

still mulling it all over.

oh i'm also thinking about picking up some torque box reinforcements and full-length subframe connectors. probably a k-member brace and strut tower brace too. that stuff's pretty cheap compared to driveline components though...

6th gear in the t56 is the same as 5th in the t5 so that wont do you any good. 5th in the t56 is between 4th and 5th in the t5. you would be better off with an astro performance t5 like mine. i paid 900 for it and its good for 450ft lbs of tq. as for your rear end you can get away with 28 spline axles up till 500ish hp, the 8.8 is a very strong rear.

why not go with a 347 instead of a 331? also which size heads did you get and what are the cam specs?
