It allows you to get to 4th gear(auto's are 4speed). If you push the button..to turn O/D off, you will only go up to 3rd gear.

I've read that you can turn it off for city driving, but obviously not for highway....I don't mess with it either way.

On most cars the auto trans will not shift into its last gear (overdrive) when activated.

over drive gives you better fuel economy by letting you go into 4th. its good to have off though when highway racing( not that i advise doing that what so ever) but since youll be cruising in 3rd rather then 4th it will down shift to 2nd faster.

now again i do not advise street racing EVER

No street racing!!! But if you go on a road course with and automatic with O/D, it is best to leave it off. This way in the tight turns the car will not shift into 4th while under braking. It will stay in third and actually help you get thru the esses faster.

By default, when you start the car O/D is ON meaning 4th gear is enabled.
If you push the button, O/D will be OFF and you'll only have up to 3rd.

So no, it doesn't hurt anything

the O/D should be off when you are cruising around town doing less then 50mph. it will save you gas and it puts less stress on the engine. when you are cruising 40mph and the O/D is on you are bogging down the engine which puts stress on the lower end (bearings mainly) and also waists gas as the engine has to work harder to keep the same speed. think of it as a manual transmission, you never put your trans into 5th or 6th gear when around town only when on the highway.
