Hey all, on my way home today from my dads house after detailing my ride I noticed a nasty grinding noise coming from what seems like the passenger side in the rear. It's a dull, metal-on-metal metallic type noise and seems to be pretty loud. I know my breaks aren't in the best condition as the car had been sitting a while before I bought it. I've only had the car for about 3 days now lol.

Hoping it's nothing too serious!

Let me know what you guys think

Also I noticed it on my street and when pulling into my driveway and I didn't want to drive it again to test it out until I got opinions.

I never noticed it before and don't think I could have missed it. The exhaust is loud so it could have covered some noise but not this much.

I just went out and looked under the car too and didn't see any fluids/etc. It never leaves any drops where it's parked.

Sounds like the rear brakes are grinding. Remove the rear wheels and inspect. You will see right away if the rotor is ground into. If so this is a prime time to upgrade the rotors and pads.

Update/Bump:

Went out for a drive down the street and circled a couple dead end streets. The noise seems to also be paired with slight skipping when its at its loudest. It also seems to make a bit of noise when I hit bumps at low speeds. But I haven't hit any at high speeds since I noticed it so I dont know if that is limited to lower speeds.

This time I also noticed a slight squeaking noise. It sounds more like rubber on metal or something of the sort.

Kinda freaked out about this, really hoping it's not the diff...

The rotors are pretty pitted, can't really take off the wheels now but I'll check later. I didn't see any gouges or anything of the sort on the outer side though

Check the exhaust. I've got a metal on metal noise right now, its my exhaust hanger hitting and creating the noise. Bumps affect it as does the rpm i'm at with the vibration of the exhaust making the noise sound different

It's definitely not the exhaust. It causes the car to skip a bit when turning really sharp. What's odd is that it doesn't happen the same way every time.

Okay my next suggestion would to be to examine the swaybar if its involved with the turns. Bottom line, crawl under there and inspect it. Supposed to be 67 tomorrow so looks like a good day if you've got the time

Alright I'll have to give it a look. Shitty thing is I've got work 9-5 and have to drive 22 miles to get there... I'm a bit worried about it

Hey Matt does the noise change when u brake lightly (ie when the rear brakes are applied), did u have the parking brake on before? Could be the cable is stuck and rear brakes are dragging.

Parking break is on every time I park since it's a manual. I haven't tried it with light breaking yet but as it stands now it's inconsistent so I fear even if it does change a bit after applying breaks it may not be related. I don't really feel any resistance either so I don't think the brakes are locked up or stuck. Also I'd think if it were the brakes it would be a steady noise, not varying and random. But I could be wrong.

What's a diff cost? Lol

If it changes with braking then its most probably the brakes, if not then like James was saying check if something is rubbing like a hanger or something, usually with Bad diff If it's the gears it usually is a humming or growling noise at speed not grinding, and if it's the posi then it clicks and is noisy when u go in reverse, lastly if it's a wheel bearing its usually noisy when u turn depending on the wheel the bad bearing is at.
