Default Exhaust Thread

Ok, I know this has been debated and beaten to death, truth be told still haven't bought my exhaust and that as my "Congratulations to myself I'm walking again gift" hahaha. Anyway, sometime before New Years mark my words I will meet up with Neil to hear his beast. Understand that this is a daily driver, not a garage or trailer queen so I do want some performance gains, but I'm not looking to spend $2000 on a complete exhaust system. But Anyway..

What axle back would you reccomend?
(I know I didn't want drone, but I am accepting the best performing axleback currently - even with some drone)

I have read that if your mufflers drone - they are not working..(i.e. Not giving you any performance gain). Any truth to this?

I heard catbacks are useless on these cars because the stock pipes flow very well....Again, any truth to this?

Headers
Are headers worth to look at? What are the benefits? Drawbacks?

Hi-Flow Cats
How do high flow catyltic converters respond on these cars? I had them on my old Buick which did make a difference along with mufflers because of how restricted stock was.

DISCUSS (and please feel free to bring up other exhaust topics/information ect)

If your gonna go with Headers go with long tubes, they give you best bang for your buck and sound, High-flow cats are a hit and miss, and are really there to block out the sound a little to collect carbons etc.

Going with shorty headers may limit your gains. it all depends on the brand. I personally like the sound of Borla, stingers preferably.

Um, I really didn't give any opinions or facts Kev, so I am unclear what you would "agree" with. I was asking for input. You were the one that mentioned to me if your exhaust drones, it's not doing its job...rather then that I am just asking for help in the mean time before I hear Neils car

if you do long tubes go with either american racing or kooks. they are by the best out there but also the most expensive. like kevin says you get what you pay for. long tubes are the best thing for your exhaust even better than axle backs

axle backs i recommend any borla system. best overall sound for our cars

ok well if u wanna read it, im happy to explain it.

The drone thing and not making power was what i mainly disagreed with. Maybe i just didnt explain it well. Drone means its the wrong muffler and its not doing its job of controling the sound. Making power has nothing to do with it.

Headers - definite power. Longtubes are the only choice that does anything. American racing or kooks ONLY. Yea, its damn pricey. 1-5/8" primaries for n/a, 1-3/4 for FI. 2.5" collectors only. The ones with 3" collectors are too big. Catted X that goes with them is the way to go. They are high flow cats and certainley will add hp and sound. Problem with some of the high flow catted X's that u can get from say BBK - the cats are crappy and wont last.

Here is what ill say. Yes without a doubt to long tubes but i would say check out MAC's(idk if they make them for S197) i have them on my car and i love them! they give you excellent amounts of power and the sound is just pure old school. i would also go with an H-pipe not an X, reason being that an X pipe with give you like 3 more horses but only about about 4000 and an H has a deeper more muscle sound then an X

know ppl that have had macs on s197. they all either wish they could, or already have sold them to go to kooks or arh. After you spend all that money on the install, you dont want anything less than the best.
