Default I thought my clutch went bad..

Hey there
The other day cruising to the picnic I went thru the 100 a toll booth and sped out fast. I shifter thru the gears rather quickly..1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th...and at 2500 rpms the tachometer jumped from 2500 to 3200 and then back down again, felt as if it was out of gear or not grasping...it did this from 4th gear and then again in 5th gear I experienced it as well.....

Now this isnt the first or second time this happened.
So I went to Cottman Transmissions to have it looked at.
Its raining like crazy, but I wanted to have a pro tell me whats up
The mans name is Mark who works there, awesome guy.
Took my car out for 20 mins, drove from Toms River to Forked River rather quickly trying to imitate what I had seen, or done.
It didnt happen...
Now, this doesn't suprise me..but his answer did.

He said this to me....
1.If the clutch was slipping , it would have slipped -there is broke and not broke, no inbetweens....besides, the tachometer went up, not down.
2.What I experienced was a power surge, could be caused by a myriad of things...gas, rev limiter,my tire size, the air filter....BUT NOT THE TRANNY.
3.No codes or icons appeared...so his conclusion was.."Not clutch"

Since he couldnt repeat the problem, even after gunning it the way he did, in the rain.....makes me feel better....what could it be?

Ever heard of/experienced a power surge?
Has anyone here had a slipping tranny when it went up i rpms, not down?
All this started after the new tires went on...maybe I ned to use diablo tuner to up the size...

Any thoughts?

My first thought is that you simply spun the tires. Now I say this because you stated that you came thru the toll booth, which is a great place to pick up other peoples oil, grease, and various fluids.

I am not sure what he meant by power surge, however the fact that he could not replicate it leads me to believe that there was something on your tires causing it to spin.
I could be wrong, I might be right. Has it done this since? Is the tranny grinding? Making noise? You can generally eliminate things with sounds and actions.
Keep us posted

i would agree with the tire spin theory if it was first to second possibly second to third but no offense it is a six banger and theres no chance of tire spin from third to fourth i cant even get a decent spin into third with my gt im lucky to chirp at the most .....mark if i was you id wait till you drive long distance again and see whats up at that time

The best way to see if the clutch is slipping is to throw it into 5th gear and gun it from about 50-70... Keep your eye on those RPM's.. If all is good, then just keep driving.. But it seems as though your clutch it fine and it was probably some other variable that caused that slip to occur

As long as your new wheels/tires are the same diameter as the stock wheels/tires, those aren't going to be an issue.

Well my originals were 16's and now i have 18's and havent made the change with diablo tuner...that could be an issue.once the weather gets better i will do that, along with eliminating the limiter.

My guess is that your Tach is acting funky...

Could be a coupe of things starting from wiring/voltage regulator in the alt./ or even a faulty gauge motor.

Have the charging system checked under no load/full load and see if there are any problems.

The Tach on my Cobra acts funky sometimes...

I wouldn't pay too much attention to it, but if it gets worse I'd certainly try to trace the problem...

Your new rims could be throwing it off ... But I wouldn't go back to Cottman Transmission for anything.......

Hey man i have the same EXACT problem. Im on 4th gear and it revs up, but doesnt go faster. This never happens on 1.2 gear only on 3 gear and up. Im driving normal, and when i want instant speed, i hold down the gas and the rpm goes up but doesnt deliver speed to the wheels, wierd, mechanic said it wasnt the clutch or transmission either.

One way to test the clutch is putting it in second gear, pull the parking brake all the way and get of the clutch. If it stall right away your clutch is good, if the clutch slips you'll know right away.
Old trick from a master mechanic.............
