Im a novice ok
But tell me this...
If I replace my old rotors with drilled rotors, is it totally necessary to change the pads on all 4?
The drilled rotors are new...
The pads were put in last year but I have a shimmy thats due to one of the rotors being on the "OUT"
Not that bad but i can get these drilled rotors and curious what would happen if I did a strait swap...
Will the old pads mess up the rotors?
yea thats true
I am getting alignment and tire balance done too and that will just about cover every aspect as to wht a wheel will shimmy "Part of the time" I was told if the shimmy is all the time, real bad ,its a bad wheel bearing hub or tie rod end....and it really isnt that bad, even after a sudden stop at high speeds...I hate when something isnt perfect...
I notice some uneven wear on the inside of my passenger tire on the edge inside the wheel well/closest to car.----> {++++}
It may be because they were used and from the previous owner, but then again I cant rotate as they are staggered
uneven tire wear huh, alignment def sounds good to me. Before i start doing suspension stuff im getting an adjustable panhard so i can realign the rear end if need be, extra insurance.
when you put new pads on they bed into the rotor. the old pads will not work. if you buy pads only and your old rotors are good you want to have them re-surfaced (bring it to a qualified garage or even some auto parts stores will be able to do this for you) so that they are measured to make sure the run out is good and that their is enough surface left that you will be safe to go through another set of pads. Once deemed ok then the new pads will bed into the re-surfaced rotors.
That being said resurfacing is never as good as new. Stopping power is acceptable but the rotors are cut and are now thinner. Brakes work on heat. More material to soak in heat. Better braking. Less material to soak heat = brake fading. I always replace when new but if the rotors are deemed in good safe shape you can get them cut cheap.
You can't replace the rotors only. The old pads will have wear and will not bed to the new rotors properly. So to answer your question - Gotta replace the pads too mark. Dont let anyone tell you different.
