Default Weights attached to rear axles...

Well I was doing my rear end swap this weekend and noticed that ford bolts on weights to each side of the rear axle under and to the side of each shock/ lower control arm mount. each side has a different size weight but I would say they were about 10 to 20 pounds on each side...

Used for traction? dampening the shock? To help stop the hop?

What gives?

I did not install them back on the rear I replaced. I do have aftermarket lower and upper control arms... Feel no difference without the weights off.... Might even be better traction on launch now actually but I did change gears and went to a big jump (331 to 430's in my automatic).

Anyone got the answer? Guess?

They are for dampening vibrations. It is an inexpensive and effective solution to offset the ride harshness of going to larger diameter wheels on a tractor axle.
