Default Breaking in Gears

Well I have heard it both ways, some say breaking in gears (putting at least 300-500 miles of stop and go on them and allowing cooling periods) is needed when you get new gears installed and some say you can just gun it right out of the shop. What do you think? Any experience either way? I am thinking about possibly getting my gears and t lok installed thursday and then going to the track Friday. Is that a bad idea?

ehh idk....I just don't like the idea of the 7.5 with it....I broke mine in after the previous owner did but I'm not a true racer so I can't really say. :P

They're one of the components most susceptible to bad break in procedure.

That being said, I bought my car with 2 miles on the clock and hammered on it from day 1. It's not like Ford breaks the gears in from the factory and my rear is silky smooth.

It doesn't hurt to break your gears in right. Noisy rear ends suck, I'd do whatever I can to give it a fighting chance.

I would just give it a couple cycles to heat it up and allow for the oils to circulate and stuff... Drive it easy from the shop to your house, then RIP ITTTT.

I prob wont be able to hold out once mine are in. Ill take it for a spin to make sure its all good. Then just gooooooooo

when i put my 4.10s in i did a 300 mile break in. no steady speeds. no hard accelerations and cool down times randomly in there. i did it in 1 day cuz the next day was open night at the track and they were fine.

I would just drive it for a 20 miles and let everything work in. Drive it a bit and get a feel for the new gears, traction etc. Then let it RIP! A side not: I have had gears that whined and all the install specs were dead on... Some will say it is a bad install... Some will blame the gear manufacturer... I believe it is a combination of both personally but make sure you dont hear any clunks, masssive howling or gear whine, ( some is going to be acceptable I have driven in many cars that had some whine right off the showroom floor but my ears are extra sensitive to it) excessive vibration etc... Just listen to the car for the first 20 or so miles and if it all checks out then you should be fine to get on it... Just make sure nobody is around you as you might be in for a slide or two...

Are you sticking with the 7.5 or did you get the whole shabang from NTO?

I like to let the car sit overnight before adding the fluid to the diff. just to make sure all the seals are set, and the gasket isnt going to leak. If you have the correct shims and the mesh pattern on the gears looks good, you shouldnt have much worries with noises. I personally will not use anything but Ford gears. I have even seen guys bring chrome gears in to be installed....wtf>?
