Default general cam question

not looking for any specific application just poking around online. so anyway to the question:

while i was on livernois site looking through their parts i found cams for a 4v 4.6L and saw they recommend lower gears. when they mean lower gears are they talking about the rear gears? and if they are do they mean lower as in 3.31s are lower than 3.55s or the reverse. the link below is the page im looking at if you need further reference. i figured id ask in case anyone else was wondering plus its always good to know these things

it could be because it will rev the engine too fast and one way to counteract that is to change the rear gear ratio.

you would go from 3.31 to say 3.73 or 4.10 because you lose some low end so this way you get up into the powerband faster and dont have to worry about losing some down low.

well the new edge guys came with 3.08 gears i believe in the GT's. i don't know about what gears the cobras came with, or the Mach 1. because both of those guys have 4v 4.6 engines and could utilize these cams. They are mighty expensive though. Cams for my engine are like ~$7-800

not to just echo what everyone already said...but when they say lower gears, they mean numerically higher. Cams (as we always say) dont really make power where there wasnt any, but they shift the rpm range of where the most power is made, as well as effect torque and its curve.

With that said, a cam that shifts your power higher in the rpm range will call for a numerically higher rear end gear is that will "shorten" all of your gears and help the car get up into the desired rpm range more quickly. This is less important in a manual car. but still something to consider. Its not really a "must have" right away though if thats what you're looking for.
