Default Identifying axels in 92 LX 5.0

This maybe a stupid question but I was wondering if anyone knew a way to identify the spline count on your axels without removal? The guy I got my car from believes the axels are stock and all he did was 3.73 ring and pinion but I want to know spline count on my axels to prep for a swap. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

stock is 28 spline and you cant tell if it has been upgraded to 31 spline with out pulling the diff cover off to count the splines.

I might give that a run when it gets a little warmer... I just really want some new wheels but the ones I want only come in 5 lugs which is why I am trying to plan the axel swap. Thanks for the input.

its a good mount of money to swap over to 31 spline you need a whole new carrier and axels and usually when people do a 31 spline they do a 5 lug at the same time so chances are they are stock.

I was speaking with a buddy of mine who has a 68 cougar with a 347 stroker in it and he is currently trying to build a posi 9" rear as he now has a 8' open, but he was saying that if I am going to guild up the car I should just wait and go with a 9" rear running 31 spline axels as the 9" will hold much more power than the 8.8..

its not really needed unless you are going for an all out drag car. the ford 8.8 track-lok is a very strong differential and can easily handle 600+hp with 31 spline axles. the ford 9 is a very strong differential and its also very expensive to build or buy.

there are very cheap ways to convert to 5 lug.
1. front rotors from a 1990 era Lincoln LSC will bolt right up to your spindles. I would reccomend new bearings, the same bearings work on either car
2.rear kit from Ford has 2 axles, bearings, and drums which will slide right on your current drum brake assembly. your not going to break the bank, and you dont have to change much. this can be done in your drive way with a few beers on a sunny afternoon
