It could be also (at least with 4.10 and higher) that the pinion is spinning so fast that it does not keep fluid on it for long and the gears howl a bit. Honestly my 4.30's whine a bit but I am not concerned. Most of the time it is an install issue but keep in mind that many guys have this issue and run years and years without problems. I know guys that have had multiple shops install gears in there cars only to find the whining got worse or never got corrected. Some brands are said to be prone to some whine too.

Just think about buying a new car. Do you break in those gears lol? No. As long as gears are set up the right way, you can drive it however the heck ya want.
