I skimmed through the thread so mind me if any of this was posted.. But from a Law Enforcement point of view here is my take on radar detectors...
A radar detector is good, IF, the officer running radar decides to leave the radar running in between getting speeds of upcoming cars.. Most dash mounted radars have remotes that turn the unit off until the officer wants the speed of an approaching vehicle in which case your detector doesnt pick it up until its too late... Even for the handheld units, your detector won't pick it up until the officer pulls the trigger for your speed and like I said by the time we flipp the switch or pull the trigger for the speed its too late on your end to even slow down...
As for the radar jammers or laser jammers to be honest they may work to block out the radar but lets face it.. if your speeding down a roadway and your car is obviously no where near the speed limit even if the officer doesnt get the reading he will still pull you over based on observation and issue the summons if he wants.. you can take it to court and argue tht the officer didnt know the exact speed and you have a chance that the judge might rule in yoru favor but 90% of the time the judge rules in favor of the officer..especially if your argument is that your vehicle has a jammer lol.. so while the jammers give you a slight edge in court it wont stop an officer from stopping you.. and if the officer is pissed (some guys take it very seriously) that you tried to "get over" on him then he will circle your vehicle for ALL additional violations that you have.. and believe me.. I have seen some guys take their time circling around.. One guy was so pissed at the driver he issued for improper tire pressure.. like I said some guys take the job TOO SERIOUS..
Lastly.. When an officer approaches a vehicle and can see a radar detector on your dash it tells us one thing.. You are a speeder.. Given that all of us speed at one time.. the detector just shows that you speed often and dont care.. take it from me.. the best thing to do is hide the detector.. some guys put it up by the rearview mirror which is good spot but i would recommend getting one that is remote mounted so no one but you can see its in the car.. i believe a piece mounts in the grill somewher and another on the windshield facing the rear of the vehicle.. it is very small so no one knows its their.. then you mount the "headunit" in the dash somewhere so while driving it will light up or whatever..
Like I said.. This is just my take on radar detectors from a law enforcement point of view.. Take the advice how you want.. Some guys will brush it off while others might put it to use.. Just be careful out there and use common sense.. Most officers are very cool about things and will give breaks.. Just be polite if getting pulled over.. Its never a good idea for a driver to start the stop with "why aer you pulling me over".. just dont argue with the officer.. its gets you no where... Also take into consideration the speed limit of the roadway you are on.. If you are in a 35mph zone dont do more then 50.. I am usually good with a 15mph cushion.. but some guys use a 10mph cushion.. it also depends on the roadway.. is it an empty highway or a side street in a school zone... just use common sense... We arent out there to F' people over but issuing tickets is part of our job.. so when you get stopped really think about who is to blame.. its not the officers fault that you are gettign stopped.. you did something to get pulled over...
