Default V8 manual vs auto

i just want to know what the main difference is between getting a V8 manual or auto , If you purchase a V8 auto is it still a 5speed ? or are you getting less because its an auto?

What year? Until the new 2011's I think all auto's were 4 speed as opposed the 5 speed manual (sometimes 6). The manual gives slightly better economy and better acceleration. Power is the same, but you loose more under WOT in an auto than in a manual

ok just to clarify... up until 05 the majority of autos were 4 speeds or lesser older auto were 3 speeds but from i guess 79 to 04 they were 4 speed overdrive trans 05 to 07 is the 5r55s which is a 5 speed auto with overdrive the 2011s come with a 6 speed auto as far as stick trans they were 4 speed until i believe 83-84 then went to 5 speed with borg warner t5s which was used until 02-03 then then they contracted tremec to do their trans the new edges had tr3550 5 speeds then in 05 it went to the remote mount 3650 but the 6 cylinders retained the t5 the whole time. then in 11 everything got a 6 speed. the biggest difference is being that there are many more moving parts the automatics need more hp to spin them thus not being able to put as much power to the wheels on the same setup with a manual car. the autos were usually notorious for less gas mileage than the stick cars until they started matching the amount of gears 05-09s are very close and 11s the autos are actually more fuel efficent but in the end it all comes down to the actualy gear ratios in the transmissions plus the gears in the rear end. but truly in the end it depends what your into whether you want to have a clutch or not because you can mechanically shift an auto trans with the correct shifter and regardless of the slight power differences stock to stock the auto will feel faster becasue there is not down time in pushing in a clutch. sorry if i rambled.. any questions?

Oh well in that case! Ha ha no need for my explanation ok well obviously both cars make 300 HP at the crank the auto in that car is a 4 speed while the 5 speed is the tremec they both have 3.55 gears in the rear and say the stick car puts down 280 to the tires the auto will put down 275 nothing to cry over

Great ramble 83 was the last year for the top loader 4 Speed, the T-5 is made by tremec. There were different T-5's as you know go to 5speed.com it will tell you the whole story? I like 5 speed for a rec. driver, but daily driver & for the 1/4 mile auto.

Ya well the t5 was originally designed by Borg warner but was later picked up by tremec but there were world class ones and then there were Borg warner bodies with tremec gears. There are a bunch of designs I mean cmon the t5 was also used in camaroes and fire chickens before they started rockin t56s

Actually, the auto Mach 1s made less power than the manual ones. The manuals have a 7k rpm redline, the autos redline at 5800. The 4v motors make most of their power up top, so limiting redline severally limits HP.

I also thought I should add that the early new edges used a t45 5 speed manual, switching to the 3650 in 02. As far as I know, the 3550 is an aftermarket translater replaced by the TKO series.
