Default DR. Colorchip Review

Well after the horror of getting a stone chip in my new hood (less than 3 weeks on the car) I knew I had to touch up the chip some how. I didn't want to go the normal touch up paint because well I have never ended up with a good end result. So after doing some research and reading some reviews I decide on the DR. Colorchip system. I went with the mid level system and it was $58 shipped, and it arrived in four days via USPS.

In the box are the directions, three brushes, one glove, one micro fiber towel, one cotton like cloth, color matched paint, and the blending solution.

The before on the hood after washing and drying the car. Pollen is kinda bad here and was laying quickly on the front of the car as I finishing drying the back grrrrrr.

I also had a few chips on the sides and wheel well lips that i was also going to try to fix.

I used the wide brush on all the chips. On their website the recommend using a brush and wipe method which I did. The recommended drying time before using the blending solution is at least two minutes. I apply ed the paint and went and vacuumed the car so the paint was left on for around 10 minutes.

The hood after the first coat of paint.

This is the door after three coats of paint with the first coat having a drying time of 10 minutes before the blending solution was applied. The second coat had a dry time of five minutes and the last coat I did the two minute time just to see if it was enough time. I did three coats to try to fill the chip as only doing one coat of paint seems to just paint the bottom of the chip and not actually fill the chip. Also forgive my nasty habit of biting my nails.

Finally how the hood looks from about four or five feet away. The chip is hard to see from this distance especially if you didn't know there was a chip there already. The doors and wheel wells came out better because the chips were shallow compared to the hood, I cant actually see where they were until I'm about a foot away from the panel surface.
Overall I'm very happy with the end result. I'm going to do a few more coats on the hood over time to see if I can fill the chip and get the paint all level. The only thing I would have done different would be to get the cheaper kit, as of right now I have enough paint and blending solution do do a couple hundred chips. http://www.drcolorchip.com/

Good stuff! I've got one on my hood and a couple on my fenders. I might have to pick this up at some point!

I've been thinking about trying this product. I saw that the reviews were good, but I was still on the fence. After reading your review and seeing your results, i'll be ordering soon. Thanks for taking the time to post this. Good stuff!

If you only have a few chips save some money and get the cheaper kit but overall I'm very happy. When I checked on the chips later in the day they seem to be blending better as the paint cures.

that's great, I've avoided that with my new front bumper....my hood has a bunch of chips on the edge, once my body shop guy gets a hold of it this summer or fall it will handle the light chips without messing up the paint. He uses a very good clearcoat to aid against chips and so far my front bumper is proof of it...it has seen some of the worst highways by me without a bra on it just because I wanted to test it out.

looks good,i had a good rock chip also, what i did was use touch up to fill the ding/scratch,top off with a dab of clear coat. wet sand the area with 1500 / 2000
then polish out area.you may see a tiny spot, but you really have to look for it! only do this if you have the tools, and time, and have some knowledge on what your doing.

So with this product it actually builds it back up to the same level depending on how deep the chip is, that's awesome do they offer all paint colors?

I wish I could use this on the damage on my car!

After waxing this weekend I discovered several spots of rock chips and that really ticked me off. Do you guys think this kit is worth having, or should I just gently dab some of the touch up paint I will get into the chips?

When I went to get primer at AutoZone the teenage sales assistant told me not to try and fix the damage I have by myself. It must be wonderful to have several hundred dollars for a body shop repair laying around!
