Default headlights: tint or covers?

hey everyone.

i'm thinking of tinting my headlights. i currently have a 2011 which i'm thinking of using tint for. when i had my 2000, i had used the plastic covers that use velcro. i was happy while i had it but i don't know that i would go that route again.

has anyone used tint for their headlights or tail lights before? or do you currently have it? any recommendations or reviews for what you've used/have?

after a bit of research, i'm thinking of ordering from here: http://www.lamin-x.com/

i have stock lamps, so i'm a little worried about compromising the light intensity, but i'm not going too dark so i think i'll be ok - going to go more smoky.

thanks very much,
-- Rebecca

From what I hear its great to use when applied correctly. It seems to be cheaper on ebay than from the website.

You are less likely to have 'issues' with DMV with tint than you are with covers. I used to have trouble with DMV with the headlight covers that came standard on the 86 Saleen when I had it. Just something to think about...

that's true, thanks.

when i would go for inspection, i just took them off before i went, that was a plus for them too, easy to take on and off. i think i'm going to go with the tint though.

should be good at inspection. they only check "emissions" through obd 2 diagnostic plug.

You don't have to worry about inspection any longer; they only check emissions as previously mentioned.

I've used lamin-x before and it was OK. It's pretty thick, doesn't shrink or stretch that well and is a huge pain to apply.
I just recently tinted the taillights on my wife's 2011 Fusion with film from here; http://www.stickercity.com/

I used lamin-x on 2 cars; my '06 WRX & my '06 Ram. Lamin-X claims that after 2 weeks any small bubbles, creases, imperfections will smooth out. In both cases that didn't happen on either of the ones I installed. I'm a perfectionist and neither time did it look good enough for me.

The film I bought from sticker city is high quality 3M vinyl film (in my opinion it's what lamin-x tried to copy). It went on easy, and had a few small bubbles and creases. HOWEVER, after about a week it was noticeably smoother and by 2 weeks it looked flawless. I'm extremely happy with it and that's why I'm suggesting it to you. Do yourself a favor and don't get the pre-cut. Just buy the bulk sheets and trim it down after it's installed. Much easier.

I used the 'Iron' on my wifes taillights and it's pretty light so would be good for headlights. If you go much darker you're going to get issues with light output, but that's your choice

I can't offer much advice here because I haven't used tint or covers - I just got completely new headlight assemblies!
