Question Dirtbike advice needed

Alright so I was dead set on getting a street bike. Key word "was". I've decided against it for various reasons. Such as, I value my life (a little), I hate paying insurance, and I don't want to spend a crazy amount on something right now.

SO. That said, I've decided on a dirtbike. Problem. Last time I rode one I was like 15 lol. So I have not a clue what size I should get, brand, year, and what price range I'm looking at.

So here's where you immensely knowledgeable folk come in because I'm a noob haha.

I know I'm most definitely going to buy used due to price restrictions. Anyway I'd like something that's fun, quick, relatively reliable, and not going to run me over $1500 (unless I can make payments, no idea if that's possible?). Also is there a certain time of the year I should look to buy? I am 6'2"(ish) and weigh I think 160 (haven't checked in a while).

Any and all help is appreciated as usual

I use to have a KTM 125. Perfect for what I wanted to do with it, pretty much trail/woods riding. I'm 5'11 175lbs

i just learned to ride on a puny honda 70 cc bike but thats just me. i felt that a 31" seat height was too much for me but it'll be perfect for you. (im 5'5" with boots on)
look into the honda crf series if youre looking for an off/onroad bike. the new crf230 is i believe 5500 new but the used ones i see for cheap. just look for the 200+ range for engine size if you feel comfortable. If you never rode a friend of mine runs the learn to ride program based at FDU in teaneck. i can get you info on it if you need it.

I would go with a 125 or a 250cc bike. I would look for a 2 stroke bike IMO. I'm not a fan of the 4 stroke bikes. My first dirt bike was a cr500 but im also 6'6" 250 lbs. That's what I learned to ride on I loved that thing for the power and the crazy ride. I miss that thing. Dirtbikes are much more fun than a streetbike. I bought a streetbike brand new 5 years ago and haven't used it in the last 2 the insurance was the killer.

If your record is clear insurance will be dirt cheap... for dirtbikes you'll need a way to transport them to trails and such, do you have a trailer or a pickup?
Dual purpose bike will give you both worlds off and on road.

And there are different kind of street bikes too... this is another path of no return, just like upgrades to the car.

Are you sure you want to go to 2 wheels?

well this may be the push I needed to get myself an ATV (never driven one, being a city boy here ), always wanted to own one and have fun with it but never knew anyone else who was into off-roading with them or dirtbikes.

Ok guys great info I appreciate it. I was thinking a 250cc or so myself but wanted opinions before I mentioned it. I'm not too worried about transporting it I do have a Subaru with a trailer so that's fine.

I definitely want 2 wheels. I've been on atv's many times and I just like the feel of a bike more I think. Also easier to store.

Jon you should definitely get one, me you winks and Alex can all slam through the trails together haha.

Thanks for all the info guys!

A 25- 4 stroke would be very reasonable.

My only advice is to stay away from a motocross style bike and stick with a trail bike. Too many people see older motor bikes cheap and think they're getting a deal, but find out that maintenance is $$$$, they're hard to ride on tight trails, they're very high-strung, and not beginner friendly.

I'd look for a Honda CR230F. It's a great 4 stroke trail bike. They even make/made a street legal version called the CR230L, but I don't think you'll find one in your price range. They're pretty desirable.
