Question Looking for opinions on car bras

I know at least a couple of you here have car bras and use them when you're going any kind of distance to help prevent against rock chips, etc.

I wanted to get some opinions about car bras, the good and the bad. The bad especially so I know what I'm getting into. Since the front end of my car is being refinished as I type and will be perfect again paintwise (no chips. etc.) I am considering putting a bra on the car for daily driving. Now I know a regular black one won't be terribly pretty, but that isn't the point. After a year of driving my car around w/o anything protecting the front end I had a slew of chips in the paint. I now have a chance to start over. My car is a daily driver and we drive pretty far on a daily basis (upwards of 80 miles). My car is also a show car and I'd like to keep her front end looking nice for shows. The bra would allow me to do that.

I am concerned though about it potentially damaging the paint, and especially damaging my stripes. With the bumper being refinished, they pulled the stripes and in 3 weeks once the paint has cured, I will have new stripes put on. How long should I wait to put the bra on? Will the bra ruin the stripes no matter how long I wait? Of course I do have to drive around for 3+ weeks without a bra to let the paint cure, so I am sure to have chips again after that time anyway. I just don't know what to do and am looking for advice.

things with bras is you have to take them off when you wash the car, another bad thing about them is if grit gets under there it messes up your paint since it will be rubbing the paint, so you would have to take it off everyday and so on, you are better off getting the clear bra done little more money but better in the long run IMO

I may be plastidipping for this winter, LOL. Cheapest solution so far.

Ideally I would like to have the clear bra installed but that is another $500 I don't have.

I agree with Eddie. I had a bra on my old Civic. I thought it looked good (black on black) but over time it rubbed off paint where the clips attached to the fenders and there was a definitive difference in the paint color at the point where the bra stopped and the exposed paint started. Because of this, I got a bug deflector for my Escape. It's done a good job of protecting the hood paint but I don't think they look that good on Mustangs. Click the link below to see for yourself:

Think a clear bra would be best for a Mustang but they ain't cheap. You also need to be careful which one you get. I've read quite a few stories of the material discoloring after a couple years. Like the stripes, you have to be very careful how you clean it.

Hope this helps

i am not a fan of car bras on cars, they do more harm then good IMO. The clear bra is the only solution, wish i did it when i had the Roush front end installed cause everyone knows how bad its chipped up now. I didn't have the money back then but wish i made myself find it

i've never had a bra so i'm not saying this from experience, but i imagine that the day you actually want to take it off, the paint under the bra versus the rest of the car will be different. the rest of the car will have had the elements (particularly the sun) while under the bra hasn't, i think the brightness of the color will be drastically different, especially on this blue. i wouldn't do it at all.

I'd avoid a standard bra at all costs for the reasons listed above. Also, think about it...a little bit of dirt/dust gets under your bra (lol) at mile #10 in your trip. It sits under there for another 30 miles with wind moving the bra around. Even a little bit is enough to cause marring in the paint.

After a while it'll add up.

Clear bra is the only way to go and even those have some drawbacks.

Yeah I hate it when dirt gets under my bra.

*sigh* I guess I'm not doing it then. I wonder what the long term side effects of plastidip on the car are.
