Default What kind of truck/s to build??

Ok, need some input. As I've posted before, we're opening a new shop catering to the custom truck and off road scene. In preparation and to get our name out there, I want to build a shop truck or 2 to show what we can do.

I already picked up an XJ that we're building for my partner. He likes Cherokees, and to be honest they're great off road. It's getting a nice long arm suspension, cool wheel/tire combo, we'll be building some tube fenders and doors, and there's a few new things we're going to try.

I need to decide what I'm going to pick for the other build. Our first thought was a late TJ or early JK Wrangler, modest lift, lots of tube parts, 37's on bead locks, etc. My thing is that it's not really what I like, so I had the thought to build a prerunner ranger. 2WD, LONG travel suspension, bypass shocks, big flares, and a late model V8 swap (either a 3V 4.6 or an LS2 (waiting for the flames on that one). Basically something built for speed.

I never see any prerunner type builds in this area, but it makes sense to me. There's not much rock crawling around here. it's all sandy whoops and mud.

So what do you guys think I should build?

or this?

Just because your getting one Jeep already, I'd do the Ranger....p.s. you can do my truck too! I'll take 37s and a suspension lift in return for promotion of the company. But seriously, if you open a shop, I'll be there in the future when I have the money getting my truck bigger.

i just got an 03 f-350 diesel crew cab and just put a chip in it so far. On the extreme tune it is 425hp and 750ft lbs. I plan on doing more things in the future but looking around there are alot of things you can do to one of them.My opinion would be a lifted ford truck since more people are willing to do that than a rock crawler.

1+++ to that! Especially a F150 haha.....Mine has a Banks Intake, PowerHungry Tunes and Tuner, Custom Dual Magnaflow exhaust (just added an X-pipe and it moves faster now than before!) and has 33" with 3" Body Lift and 2.5" Leveling............would like to get 35" by 12.5 Mud-Terrains on it and when I have money put a 6" suspension lift and maybe 37s with deep dish wheels. That'll be a while.

I'm personally not into the "jacked to the sky" HD diesel thing. I have the "form follows function" philosophy. I'm really leaning towards the 2WD, long travel, thing. Although there are lot more guys with modded wranglers around, and I'd like to cater to them.

Perhaps I should build both.

My wallet won't like that idea though... We need a lot of money just to put the shop together. We've been spending the past few weeks shopping around, looking at lifts, tire changers & balancers, A/C machines, parts washers, and some fab tools like bandsaws, tube benders, etc. I already have a nice TIG welder, a few MIG machines and a plasma, but we still need plenty of equipment.

I know I'll wind up with a bunch of shop vehicles eventually, it's just a matter of time/budget right now.

i'd prefer the pre-runner but when it comes down to it i won't be the customer, and a lot more people around here have lifted wranglers for sure

You're definitely right about what we see around here. I doubt I'll have a bunch of people wanting prerunner just because I build one, but it'll be a cool showcase of our abilities.

No matter what, I was thinking about hosting an open house for NJ Staggers in the spring when the place is all set up. I figure one Sunday, ill open the place up, find a few people that need some mods installed and donate some labor and shop equipment, bring in some food and drinks, maybe fire up the BBQ.

I'd also like to have some shop sponsored off road days. Meet at the shop, head out to some nice (legal) trails that are in the area, and just have a good time.

I want the place to be a fun hang out spot. We'll always fun toys and projects around.

Hopefully, we're signing the lease 12/1...

Pre-runner style would be badass... I love Jeeps though...

BBQ and Mod Party would be cool.

I also think I would love to be a part of the off-road event.
