Default 1998 f250

ok so i started talking to serge about this earlier but i want to learn a lot more about the 1998 f250 5.4L 2V triton engine. im buying said engine from turbomustang as a project to learn with and eventually use. im sure there are plenty of reasons why this would be a bad idea to do seeing as how its an old engine but it was a deal i couldnt refuse. so lets hear what kinda of specs you can find because im having a hard time finding a lot of info on these engines.

i want to keep this all motor but i dont mind hearing ideas for boosted applications as well

at this point from doing some reading the best cheap mods would be PI heads and cams and leave the NPI bottom end...any other suggestions?

its a boat anchor. i wouldnt waste any time on it.

edit

damn, you already have it? You could build it and sell it, but im sure u will lose money. This isnt for the mustang is it? I mean if you really wanna build it, you coudl find a ford truck that needs a motor, buy it for cheap, put the motor in and sell the truck for more. Or have a nice truck...

Brian, this is copied from another board...

Keep in mind this is the stuff needed to swap a 5.4 into a SN95 based car...

You'll need a motor, trans, clutch&flywheel or flexplate&tc, 4.6 motor mounts, 8.8 rear, HPS 5.4L intake manifold, 4.6 oil pan & pickup tube, x/h pipe (modded), accessories, possibly a hydraboost & mc. Assorted other bite but those are the major assemblies.

I'll try to find some more specs/interesting stuff for you...

But like I said, unless you are gonna put a shot/boost/4v heads on that 5.4 it's not terribly great.

Sure the torque WILL be there in the low end, but this motor will definitely run itself out of breath right around 4500RPMs...

at this point its not gonna be going into a truck since i dont have the money to buy another vehicle of any sort. its gonna be my long term project for right now. i want to get me some learning about engine work and if everything checks out ok with the block and what not it will eventually go into some vehicle...maybe the stang but not overly sure yet. it all depends on what i can do with it

Basically the heads dont flow enough to take advantage of the 5.4's cubic inches, as well as the NPI cams... They just dont have a long enough duration to properly let the engine inhale/exhale...

As a result of this, as the motor spins quicker and quicker it starves itself of mixture/ the ability to exhaust its spent gases, what you get it a gradual(sometimes sudden) drop in power ie: hitting a wall...

If you've ever gotten a ride/driven in a 96-98 Mustang GT you would feel this pretty easily.

Hope this makes a little more sense...

in other words...its a truck motor...a boat anchor...lol. But enough negativity. I think you can concentrate on making it a nice cheap build, then i bet we coudl get a truck for nothin to put it in

so if i understand correctly if i was to do a swap from NPI heads, cams, and intake to PI parts it wouldn't run out of breath? from what i have read it was a very common mod that increased the compressions ratio and flow of air/fuel and exhaust
