Default 2003 Ford Explorer Hub assembly change?

So my girlfriend has an '03 Explorer that needs a hub assembly (with ABS wire) changed. I've been quoted at two places for $120 and $100 for just the labor, and then add in the part which I'll be buying.

Anyone know if that's a fair price for the job of just the front driver side? Or if you guys know any shops near Hudson County that can do it for a better price, please let me know. The car is real bad and can't be driver too far since the wheel has taken a real nasty angle and ABS locks it after a few miles.

As for the part, anyone have any reason to go for Motorcraft over Timken, etc.? They're about the same price so I'm just wondering.

Those are fair prices for the labor. I changed out both of the hub assemblies on my Ranger which are very similar - if not the same. The first one I paid $120 in labor charges, the second one (which crapped out on me right after) I changed myself to save money.

The cheapest prices I found were on www.rockauto.com - I think I went with the Timkens. If you've got moderate experience turning wrenches and swinging 3 pound mallets to separate the parts, you should save the money and do it yourself.

Thanks eddie.

And wink, I'd assume just removal of wheel, caliper, rotor, 36mm socket to remove the axle nut that holds it, remove hub assembly, grease new one and reassemble everything? If so, it seems easy enough.

Also, would I need to get the ABS light reset? It's been turning on and off at random times due to it. Or would the replacement of the hub fix that on its own?

There's also three bolts that hold the assembly in place opposite of the axle nut.

As far as the ABS light, I'm not sure how that is effected. Mine never turned on when I had the problem.

ABS lights usually clear themselves as soon as the problem is fixed

Ah gotcha. I picked up the Timken today in-store from Autozone for $115 (with a major discount) so if we can't get it done by the weekend, I'll tackle it on Saturday.

Thanks guys!
