Default Humming and Metal on Metal Grinding Sound

2nd time my F150 has done it in the last 2 weeks, wasn't sure of what it was til I did some research.....found out it most likely is my IWE Solenoid (i have 2 on the F150) -- not sure how to replace it, etc or if its definitely that....my question is whether I should just take it to Ford and have them diagnose it in the morning on monday and see (since I have to go work next week and need the F150 for mid-week to help Brian) Anyone?

Alittle more info on where the sound is coming from, up front, under the truck. Etc. Sooo many things can cause the sound you are hearing and I highly doubt it's the solenoid you're speaking of.

IWE = Integrated Wheel Ends. Are you thinking the solenoid is not shutting off vacuum? maybe try disconnecting them and reconnecting them... check the connections etc...

It looks pretty simple to do.

Pics attached.

Thanks from the center but then it sounds like the motor area......i read on other forum that it tries to engage 4wd but it doesn't successfully do it since i haven't turned the nob. So maybe its that or not

hmm well maybe try locking ur front wheels and drive a short line and see if it makes the same noise and then dis engage them and see what happens. Also did u use ur 4 wheel drive with the snow the past couple weeks. I know when i used mine it squeaked due to not being used in so long and i probally need to fix some stuff so maybe did the same for u its just a idea

I actually think it maybe the IWE....hopefully get it from some ford dealer next week early enough to install it before it gets worse....my factory one doesn't have the cover like 06Mach1 posted so I need the new one...I opened the hood and it water was dripping right on it so that may explain the problem.

Update: He has decided to make the noise anytime i get on the highway now and cruise at highway speeds trying to engage 4wd all by himself....so I'm picking up the part today and fixing it for tomorrow.... this is why I decided to take the stang with the frozen brake....figured it'd do less damage than my truck grinding the gears or something

Just finished replacing the IWE Solenoid, will only find out when driving on the highway for a while......truck still makes some noise that goes along with the movement of the truck....definitely not coming from the motor.....Drivetrain Issue? Won't find out for sure til I get to Ford sometime in the next 2 weeks.....Mustang goes first with the ebrake problem
